Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Expressed is an iPhone app made by East 73 Studio LLC, a small independent studio in Houston, Texas ("we," "us"). This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and who it is shared with. The short version: we collect only what the app needs to work, we don't show ads, we don't track you across other apps or websites, and we never sell your data.

What we collect

Account information. Your email address and password, used to create your account and sign you in. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are never visible to us.

Your bar and preferences. The information you add to the app so it can work for you:

  • Bottles in your inventory (such as brand, size, ABV, category, and open date)
  • Pantry items, staples, and your shopping list
  • Favorites, ratings, recently viewed drinks, flavor preferences, and blocked ingredients
  • Requests you type into Discover (for example, "something bitter but not too boozy") and the suggestions the app gave you
  • A count of how many scans and AI suggestions you've used each month

Community recipes. If you choose to share a recipe with the community, the recipe and any comments you post are visible to other users, together with an author name. Today that author name is the part of your email address before the @ sign, so please keep that in mind before sharing.

We do not collect your name, phone number, address, date of birth, location, contacts, or photo library, and the app contains no advertising, analytics, or tracking tools.

Photos and label scanning

The app uses your camera only when you choose to scan a bottle, and asks for permission first.

  • Label scanning: when you photograph a bottle label, the photo is sent securely to our server and on to Anthropic's Claude AI service, which reads the label and identifies the bottle. The photo is used only for that request. We do not save it, and it is not added to your account.
  • Barcode scanning: the camera reads the barcode on your device. Only the barcode number, and the product name it returns, are sent to look up the bottle.

If a scanned bottle isn't already in our catalog, we may keep its details (such as brand, name, size, and ABV) to improve the catalog for everyone. These details are about the bottle, not about you, and are not linked to your account.

How data is used

We use your information only to run the app:

  • Signing you in and keeping your bar, preferences, and favorites synced to your account
  • Showing which cocktails you can make, or almost make, with what you have
  • Generating AI cocktail suggestions in Discover and identifying bottles from photos and barcodes
  • Showing community recipes and comments
  • Applying monthly limits on free scans and suggestions
  • Answering your support requests

We do not use your data for advertising, sell it, or share it with data brokers.

Third-party services

We use a small number of service providers, each only as needed for the app to work:

  • Supabase (USA) hosts our database, sign-in, and servers. Your account, bar, and preferences are stored there, encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Anthropic (USA) provides the Claude AI service. It receives label photos you scan, product names from barcode lookups, your Discover requests along with relevant parts of your bar and ratings, and the text of community recipes when they are being formatted. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, this data is not used to train its models.
  • UPC Item DB and Open Food Facts receive barcode numbers to look up products. No information about you is sent.
  • Expo (USA) delivers app updates. Like any download, this involves standard technical information such as your IP address, app version, and device type.
  • Apple distributes the app and processes any purchases. If you have enabled sharing in your iPhone's settings, Apple may also share anonymous crash reports with us.

Data retention

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active, so the app can show you your bar and history. Label photos are not stored. When you delete your account, we delete your account and associated data, including your bar, preferences, favorites, ratings, Discover history, and community recipes and comments, within 30 days.

Deleting your account: email hello@east73studio.com from the address you signed up with, and we will delete it within 30 days.

Your rights

You can view and edit most of your information directly in the app. You can also ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it by emailing hello@east73studio.com. Depending on where you live (for example, the European Union, the United Kingdom, or California), you may have additional rights under local law; we will honor those requests. Our providers are based in the United States, so your data is processed there.

Children

Expressed is about alcoholic drinks and is intended only for adults of legal drinking age where they live (21 or older in the United States). It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we will let you know in the app.
